Joint Replacement - Knee

Body Area: Legs / Feet
Body Parts: Knees
Symptoms: Pain
Description:
Sometimes, prolonged knee pain requires replacement of the joint. Expect to stay in the hospital for 3-5 days. Full recovery typically takes 2-3 months to a year, but even after your recovery, your new joint may not be as durable as a natural joint; do not engage in rigorous activity to avoid damaging your new joint. As with any surgery, your doctor will need to know any medications (even non-prescription and herbal) that you are taking. You may be asked to stop using blood thinning drugs such as aspirin up to a week before your surgery. Before you get a hip or knee replacement you should keep in mind that after the surgery, you will have limited mobility. Before your surgery your should prepare your home so that you can avoid having to use your stairs, reduce your risk of tripping and allow yourself to get around easily on crutches or in a wheel chair. Prepare a living space on the ground floor of your home and install safety rails or a bench in your shower. Find a physical therapist for after your surgery to ensure a full recovery.
